Ryan's Second Reaction

After finishing the first chapter, I find myself confused about both K.’s situation and the legal system of this society. Despite being under arrest, the supervisor assumes K. will go to work that day as the supervisor says that there is nothing from stopping K. from living his normal life in addition to going to work, three of his coworkers will follow him and basically do whatever K. asks of them. This legal system is incredibly unorthodox, I find it weird how the process by which someone is arrested involves not being told why they are being arrested then continuing on with their normal day with the exception that they are given helpers a their disposal. The whole situation seems as if K. is just having a bad dream. Within the first chapter, there is an interesting shift in power, at first, K. is powerless when he is being arrested, but then in the same day, K. takes a position of power as he calls on the three men at his disposal to observe them. The interaction between K. and Miss Bürstner is also peculiar and does not seem to accomplish anything. K. waits for Miss Bürstner for most of the night implying that he must talk to her about something of dire importance; however, once they begin conversing he does not seem to be saying anything. K. eventually proceeds to recounting the events of his morning, but Miss Bürstner seems disinterested and nervous about something. The ending of the chapter left me shocked, as K. kisses Miss Bürstner in what seems to be an aggressive and spontaneous manner, yet she acts as if nothing happened. The novel has drawn me in so far and I am excited to continue reading.
