The next few pages in Kafka’s The
Trial, do not advance the story much, but give the reader a little bit more
background on K.’ s life. K. is a man of who appears to have his life together
and is satisfied with his daily routines. He enjoys work and takes time out of
everyday for himself. Today, however, he is having a bad day, to say the least.
The officials allow him to go to work accompanied by three men from his bank.
He has a hard day, so after work he wishes to go straight home instead of going
for a walk or to the tavern. When K. returns home he speaks with Frau Grubach.
His concern for her and her concern for him shows a mutual compassion for one
another. She really cares about his happiness and well-being. Are they good
friends? Past lovers? Future lovers?
I’m curious to see more of his relationship with his landlord. While
talking, Frau Grubach tells K. what she has heard of his arrest. She says,
“You’re under arrest all right, but not the way a thief would be.”, later referring
to his arrest as scholarly. Based on this observation, we have cleared up any
speculation that K. did anything violent or extremely serious. I believe that
K. has been arrested due a political issue, most likely a misunderstanding of
some sort.
