Natalie's Response to Ryan
Like Ryan, and mostly everyone in the group, I
am confused about K.’s situation. Finishing chapter 1 did not clear up any
questions but instead brings up more questions. I do agree that this legal
system seems unorthodox to us, but maybe in the country K. is living in this is
the sort of legal system they have and therefore not as bizarre as we view it.
I also agree with Ryan that so far K.’s situation seems like a bad dream,
that’s something I wrote about in my reaction and I’m glad that someone else
feels the same way. Unlike Ryan I don’t believe that there is a shift in power
from K. being powerless when he is being arrested to K. having power when he
has the three other men to his disposal. I don’t think he has this power because
at one point he is distinguishing the three men he works with from himself by
alluding to the fact that they’re free but he is not. We see this when the
narrator says “he snapped, without noticing how odd it was to speak to free men
in this way”. By K. creating this distinction between free and not free, then K. can't have power because he isn't "free". Like Ryan I think K.’s final interaction with Miss Burstner was
really random and her reaction seemed unlikely.
