Much like Ryan, I feel that the way the events transpire in this chapter only add to the growing strangeness of this novel. Maybe this is the wrong word to use, but I felt that most of this chapter kind of felt “cloudy”. Many things did not seem very clear nor definite, things just kind of happened and people just happened to show up. K.’s walk to the court house particularly exemplified this. A lot of it seemed very hazy to me. I was also put off by the scene with the washer woman. I found it to be somewhat eerie. I felt like it could have easily replaced a scene in a horror movie.
I also did not understand, though, why the judge told K. he was late. I am going to trust K. and assume that the court room actually does open at nine o’clock. If anyone should know this, it is the judge. With that aside, the judge should not have been mad at K. for being late because K. did not even know what time he was supposed to be there. He was not told the location or the time of the trial. If this did not hold true, maybe K.’s actions could have been seen as contempt of the court. But, K. was merely handling the situation in the best way he knew how. Seeing the incompetence that obviously runs rampant in the courts of the story, I am now starting to return to K.’s side.
