Like Raoul I also think the second chapter’s
atmosphere was very bizarre. Also, the second chapter continues to show
dreamlike qualities that we saw in the first chapter, as things and people seem
to randomly appear, such as the three men from the bank are watching K. walk to
the courtroom, which gave off an eerie atmosphere. So far, I cannot say I do
not like the novel, but at times the novel is confusing and hard to follow, as
certain events happen that seem out of place and very peculiar, for example,
during K.’s hearing he sees the washerwoman and a man at the back of the room
and for some reason jumps off the stand to save her, but everyone in the room
crowds around K. That scene was weird and I did not one hundred percent
understand what was happening. There are several other oddities during the
second chapter as Raoul points out. In my opinion, the most unusual ones were
K. not being told specific directions or a meeting time for his hearing and the
actual setup of the courtroom. I also think it was unwise of K. to criticize
and denounce the legal system during his first hearing because he was not
completely aware of his situation as every person in the room seemed to be part
of the legal system. Like Raoul, the legal system of this society has left me
utterly confused and the only way to figure out some of my questions is to
continue reading.
