Natalie, I completely agree
with you, after the first chapter I feel as if we are left with too many
unanswered questions. This could be a good thing because it increases the
intensity and mystery of the story; but on the other hand, is extremely
frustrating. I do find myself asking the same exact questions as you, but I
believe that the most important question of the chapter is “Why is K. under
arrest?”. I feel like this might be a question that we are not going to find
out for a while, which is going to leave us frustrated L. I also believe that the entire chapter feels like a dream,
with parts of intense detail and parts of no detail at all. It goes without
question that K.’s day has been horrible. And everything seems to not make
sense; however, from Atlas Shrugged I
have learned that “whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check
your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong”. I believe that one of
our basic premises about the story is wrong; I don’t know what it is, but one
of them is wrong. It is probably an assumption about the legal system (we are
probably thinking that this is the US legal system). Finally, I agree that all
of these weird contradictory and confusing events only make The Trail a more exciting read, and
leaves me wanting to solve the mysteries.
