Kaylee, I think the person who translated your version of the book saw it as unnecessary and therefore omitted it completely. I could understand where this person is coming from being that this portion of the novel sounds slightly more like a group of friends gossiping rather than something more eventful.
I did not consider the possibility that K. might have some sort of attraction to Ms. Burstner. This could probably explain his behavior a little better rather than my theory that he is simply acting obnoxiously and with a sense of, like you said, “high and mightiness”. It is possible that he is also acting a bit on edge because of his whole situation. Frankly, I would be too. If I had to go through a process as hectic as the judicial system in this book I would be kind of antsy as well. But, when K. gets upset with the captain and Ms. Montag for insinuating that K. “likes” Ms. Burstner, it kind of reminded me of how kids react defensively when people accuse them of “liking” someone. Maybe, if K. really does have feelings for Ms. Burstner, he is trying to avoid them turning into anything more than just feelings. Maybe he is so defensive because he does not want to have to balance a relationship on top of unsystematic court case after court case.
