K.’s encounter with the court
offices was strange to say the least. Similar to other parts in the novel, not
much of characters actions were explained nor was there any progression in K.’s
trial. I don’t understand why when the lady introduces him to the Clerk of
Inquiries and she says that he knows everything about the law and courts he would
not ask him questions about why he is arrested or the way the court system
works. I guess it has a lot to do with him not wanting to seem inferior by
asking other’s to help him. Its also interesting that they have to have this
person to basically be their “publicity” and inform people about the courts
because as the lady states many people don’t know about it. This goes back to
this invisible law and court that is prevalent in this novel. Clearly its not
just K. who doesn’t know about the courts, its most of the population. After
much of what has occurred in this book it doesn’t surprise me that no one knows
about the court. I also thought it was important to note the stale and suffocating
air in the law offices, this seems to be present every time K. comes in contact
with the courts. I thought it was also strange because it physically
incapacitated K., the fact that the air in the court offices caused K. to be unable
to walk seems like a big deal yet the lady in the offices says that it happens
to most people. The air creates this suffocation that I think may be meant to
represent the entire judicial system.
